St. Mark’s Church was founded in 1835. The first church was a frame edifice erected in 1837 on South Fifth Street and Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. In April 1841, St. Mark’s Church, the first stone church of Gothic design in Manhattan or Long Island, was consecrated by the Rt. Reverend Abram Newkirk Littlejohn, D.D. Bishop of Long Island.
